Fernão Rodrigues de Calheiros Nationality: Portuguesa Biographical Note: Portuguese troubadour, most probably active in the first decades of the 13th century, that is, in the initial stage of the Galician-Portuguese lyric, as the placement of his compositions in the first sections of the songbooks seems to confirm. Although we don’t have any concrete biographical data regarding Calheiros, Resende de Oliveira supposes that he could be a brother of Paio and Pero Rodrigues de Calheiros, the two brothers of Ponte de Lima documented as witnesses in the confirmation of the Elvas foral (charter) made by Afonso III in 1252. Since at least the first one of this two brothers is also documented as already an adult in 1221, this hypothesis seems plausible. That being, he would be, then, the son of Rodrigo Fernandes de Calheiros and Sancha Mendes, a lady that, we may add, according to the Lineage books (LD 13A2,14D6, LC42A6) was born as the result of an extraconjugal love affair between Elvira Nunes Velha and a certain Mem d'Alaúde (eventually a minstrel, since alaúde is a lute). It should be added that Henrique Monteagudo2 and, more recently, José António Souto Cabo3 pushed back the chronology of the troubadour to the final decades of the 12th century and beginning of the 13th. identifying him with the Fernando Rodrigues that, in 1195, confirms a land purchase in Burgos by the comendador of the order of Calatrava (and its future master) Gonçalo Anes da Nóvoa, brother of the troubadour Osoiro Anes.
