Diogo Moniz
Trovador medieval

Nationality: Galega?

Biographical Note:

Nothing is known regarding this author which, given the placement of his two songs at the beginning of the National Library Songbook, should belong to the first generation of Galician-Portuguese troubadours. Carolina Michaelis1, taking his surname into account, raised the possibility of Diego Moniz being a brother of the troubadour Airas Moniz de Asma (both authors are, in fact, the first ones under B), an hypothesis that has been taken up by the majority of posterior researchers. Moreover, Resende de Oliveira2 further informs us about the presence of a few homonyms in documents from Galician monasteries at the end of the 12th century and beginning of the next, namely Oseira. It should also be added that we know, by the Colocci Index, that besides his two preserved love songs, the songbooks also included four more of his compositions, now lost.
