Biographical Note:

Galician troubadour, by all indications active in the second and third quarters of the 13th century. Resende de Oliveira identified him as one of the sons of Paio Soares de Ribela, a knight documented at the beginning of the century in S. Xulián de Ribela, in the province of Ourense. Recently, Rón Fernandez located in the same region one Martim Pais de Ribela, who confirms a document in 1225, and who may be the troubadour’s brother. He equally located, now in a donation dated 1246, one Rodrigo Pais who would be the troubadour himself. What is certain is that he passed, in the middle of the century, by the Castillian court, namely the circle of Alfonso X (prince or King), as it may be deduced by the allusion he makes, in another satirical composition of his, to Fernando Escalho, a character equally satirized by troubadours within Alfonso X’s circle, such as Pero Garcia Burgalês and Pero de Ambroa.
