Afonso Pais de Braga
Trovador medieval

Nationality: Portuguesa

Biographical Note:

Portuguese troubadour coming from a gentry lineage originating from the town of Braga, as his name demonstrates. The 1258 inquiries tell us that he had possessions in the Guimarães region, and at the same time indicates us that he was of an adult age by that time. Moreover, Resende de Oliveira1 believes that he could have had connections to the Briteiros’ family, since both lineages are from the same region, and that those connections may have facilitated Afonso Pais’ access to the court of Afonso III. One of his songs seems in fact to point in that direction, as we suggest in the general note. We do not have, however, any further informations allowing us to better clarify his biography.
