Fernão do Lago
Trovador ou Jogral medieval

Nationality: Incerta

Biographical Note:

Author of a single preserved song, Fernão do Lago has been identified by some researchers as the troubadour Fernando Esquio (esquio would be the correct reading for the name appearing in the manuscripts, according to these specialists). Resende de Oliveira1, however, doubts this identification, not only by the position of Fernão do Lago in the Italian aphographs (in a group of Galician minstrels, so it seems plausible that he was one of them), but also because the surname Lago (and the respective toponym) are indeed documented both in Portugal and Galicia. Without concrete data allowing a minimum identification, and without any certainties, it seems to us that this researcher’s hypothesis may be the most consistent one, even because the name Fernão do Lago appears quite clearly in the Italian aphographs and seems to be the correct reading.
