Pedro Anes Solaz
Trovador ou Jogral medieval

Nationality: Galega

Biographical Note:

Troubadour active in the mid-13th century, most probably natural of the region of Pontevedra, Galicia, where, in Meis, the monastery of Nogueira, mentioned in one of his compositions, was located1. In fact, his surname, unlike Carolina Michaëlis believed (she explained it as nickname and presumed him a minstrel2), should have it’s origins in a toponym attested in Galicia, pointing to his probable belonging to a gentry family in the region, a social status more in accordance to the placement of his compositions in the songbooks (in a zone of noble authors). Furthermore, Ron Férnandez3 located an individual with the same surname, one João Solaz, in the Lugo documentation (attested in 1304). Excepting this indirect data, we don’t have, however, any other data allowing us to trace a minimum biography of this author.
